This morning, we had the opportunity to meet Jeda and her handler Keith Chambers, from Interquest Detection Canines. Interquest provides random, periodic visits to schools in an effort to keep them safe and chemical free through what they refer to as a "comprehensive detection and deterrence program". Jeda and all Interquest canines are trained to discover the presence of drugs, alcoholic beverages, abused medications, and weapons (gunpowder).
Interquest Detection Canines is NOT a law enforcement entity and they will not conduct investigations. Interquest will bring in a dog and search student lockers and classrooms and NEVER people. If the dog indicates on a school locker, a desk, an article of clothing, etc, then school administration will conduct a search in accordance with school policies and work with the student(s) to discover the reason for the dog indicating on the item. If the search discovers an illegal or other item that should not be in school or on school property, then school administration will discern whether law enforcement needs to be involved or if the situation can be handled internally following policy.
Again... the whole purpose of our working with Interquest Detection Canines is to help ensure that our school campus is safe and secure and that students make wise choices regarding what they bring to school.
